Rebekah is a Director, Agile Learning Facilitator, and founder/vision holder at Wildwood. She has been following her passion for learning about how children learn and grow and thrive -- and creating spaces for this process to flourish -- for almost 30 years. She studied psychology at Davidson College, and completed an M.S. in Human Development and Family Studies at UNC-Greensboro. After working in early childhood settings, providing training to child care teachers, and working with young children and families as an early intervention service provider, she completed an M.A. in School Psychology at Texas State University. Her experience working in schools led to both greater understanding of the experience of children facing a variety of challenges, as well as lingering concerns and questions about how children might truly thrive in educational settings.
Rebekah discovered the philosophy of self-directed education (SDE) as a new parent, and realized that this approach resonated with all she had learned from working with children over the years (as well as from her own children). As her family began the journey of living and learning outside of conventional schools, she began researching various models of SDE communities and attending multiple AERO (Alternative Education Resource Organization) conferences, where she discovered Agile Learning Centers. Wildwood ALC was created with a small group of founders in 2016.
Rebekah loves to travel and immerse in other cultures, learn languages, and curl up with good books as much as she can. She is also committed to educating herself about inequities in our society and working to create a more just world. She loves witnessing young people flourishing in an atmosphere of trust and empowerment, where they have the freedom to learn and grow in their own unique ways.
